Self-hosting: the hidden costs
Matomo self-hosted sounds “free” at first glance. In practice, however, there are ongoing costs that most comparisons sweep under the table:
- Server-Infrastruktur: A VPS or dedicated server in Switzerland or the EU, often CHF 20–60/month (e.g. Hetzner, Infomaniak, Cyon, Hostpoint)
- SSL-Zertifikat: Let's Encrypt is free, but configuration and renewal monitoring cost time
- Database maintenance: MySQL tuning, index optimisation, regular clean-up jobs
- Software-Updates: Matomo publishes a new major or minor release every 4–6 weeks – miss one and security patches pile up
- Backups & Disaster Recovery: daily database snapshots, off-site backups, test restores
- Monitoring: Uptime-Checks, Disk-Space, MySQL-Slow-Queries, fehlgeschlagene Cron-Jobs
- Security-Patching: not just Matomo itself, but also PHP, MySQL, the web server, Linux
5 to 10 hours of upkeep per month is realistic. At CHF 80 to 120 per hour that's CHF 400 to 1,000 monthly plus servers, so CHF 5,000 to 12,000 a year.
Logiwolf is fully managed instead: no servers, no patches, no backups. Free entry with 2,000 pageviews, Professional with 100,000 pageviews for CHF 29.95 a month.
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) im Jahresvergleich
For a website with 100,000 pageviews per month and a need for heatmaps/replays:
- Logiwolf Professional: CHF 360/year – heatmaps and replays included
- Matomo Cloud + Heatmaps + Replays: €40 + €21 + €33 = €94/month ≈ CHF 1,080/year
- Matomo Self-Hosted + Heatmaps + Replays: Server CHF 50 + plugins €54 (≈ CHF 50) + 7 h effort × CHF 100 = approx. CHF 800/month ≈ CHF 9,600/year
Put differently: even the top Logiwolf tier is cheaper than Matomo Cloud with the needed add-ons, and about 25 times cheaper than a realistic Matomo self-hosting set-up.
When Matomo is still the right choice
Matomo scores on feature breadth and extensibility. There are use cases where Matomo is clearly the better choice:
- Detailliertes E-Commerce-Tracking: Produkt-Performance, Kategorien-Analyse, Marge-Tracking – Matomo hat hier mehr Tiefe als Logiwolf
- SEO-Reports im Tool: if you want Search Console and web analytics in one dashboard
- A/B-Tests: Matomo offers a built-in A/B testing module (as a premium plugin)
- Custom Plugins: If you want to develop your own plugins, Matomo is open and well documented
- Sehr hohe Trafficmengen: From several million pageviews per month, self-hosting can be cheaper, since there is no volume-based billing
- Volle Datenkontrolle: if your compliance team requires the data to sit on a server you can audit yourself
Privacy: both good, with differences
Both can run GDPR and revFADP compliant. The difference is the default: Matomo sets cookies out of the box and must be configured to cookieless, forget a step and you're not compliant. Logiwolf is cookieless from the factory, with no configuration risk.
Schweizer Hosting
Matomo Cloud hosts in Germany, and with self-hosting you pick and maintain the Swiss provider yourself. Logiwolf hosts only in Zurich and Geneva, with no worry about providers or third-country risk.
